How to transition from traditional investing to digital assets safely

7 min read

This article is about process, not allocation. It does not suggest whether you should hold digital assets, or how much. It covers what genuinely differs from a brokerage account, so that if you do proceed you are making an informed decision rather than discovering the differences afterwards.

Custody is the real change

In a brokerage account, the broker holds the asset and there is a recovery path if you lose your password. With self-custody, the key is the asset. Lose it and no support desk can restore it; leak it and a transfer cannot be reversed.

Both custodial and self-custodial arrangements exist, and each carries a different risk. Custodial means trusting an institution. Self-custody means trusting your own operational discipline. Neither is automatically safer — they simply fail in different ways.

Settlement is final

A card payment can be disputed. A bank transfer sent in error can sometimes be recalled. A confirmed on-chain transfer generally cannot. That single property explains most of the practical advice you will read: verify the destination, send a small test first, and slow down when a process feels urgent.

Keep records as you go

Tax treatment varies by jurisdiction and changes. What does not change is that reconstructing a year of activity afterwards is far harder than recording it as it happens.

  • Date, amount and counterparty for every acquisition and disposal.
  • The value in your home currency at the time of each transaction.
  • Fees, which are frequently deductible and just as frequently forgotten.
  • Transfers between your own wallets, so they are not mistaken for disposals.

Patterns worth recognising

Fraud in this space is unusually consistent. Almost all of it depends on urgency, a promise of guaranteed return, or persuading you to move an asset somewhere you did not intend.

  • Anyone who needs a decision immediately is managing you, not helping you.
  • A guaranteed return is a claim no genuine market participant can make.
  • Support staff never need your recovery phrase. Nobody legitimate ever will.
  • A link sent to you is not a substitute for typing the address yourself.
